GREAT BURGERS and "REAL" FRIES
by sandra
on March 29, 2012
We made our first visit to Burger Island tonight.
We ordered - chicken fried steak sandwich, jr hickory burger to eat there and jungle burger and sweet potato fries to go.
The lady taking orders was very helpful. I wanted a smaller burger and she advised that you could get any burger in jr size. She also rang up the to go order to be prepared after our eat in meal so that it would be hot to go.
When the order came out of the back, the cook brought it to our table and was very polite.
The burger was HOT - right off of the grill - with lots of onions and BBQ sauce. The chicken fried steak sandwich was warm - an acceptable temperature - but not as hot off the fryer as the burger.
The french fries are "real" :) - very good and hot from the fryer. We did not notice on the menu that the fries were seasoned. It was OK - but next time we will ask for the seasoning to be left off.
Buns were fresh and the condiments were plentiful and tasty.
Our to-go order was brought out when we were ready to leave.
Entire order was prepared as requested.
The decor is very plain - some booths along both walls with tables and chairs in the middle. 2 TVs were mounted on the wall.
It is no frills - but the food is really really good.
We will definitely be back.

Burger Island!
I like the name and with palm trees on their logo... man, this place is going to be cool, eh?

Not so much.

It was Monday at 1:00. There was just one other couple seated in the place waiting for their burgers. There was one guy waiting on his take out order ahead of me. The “decor”? Pretty much "four walls", plain tables, and a flat screen TV that had the “DISH” logo bouncing around on it.

Where were the palm trees? The sandy beach murals? How about at least a "thatched roof" over the ordering counter?

The lone girl working the counter shouted (to her credit) “hello” when I entered. No smile, but I've learned not to expect that these days from counter folks. I looked over the menu, made a decision and she rang it up.

So... a burger, onion rings and an iced tea costs.... $9.46?! Really? This better be one heck of a burger! I took my seat.

It astonished me that with only ONE other table seated besides me in the dining area (and they were eating) that a guy from the kitchen (that you cannot see behind a closed door) came out with my lunch basket and shouted, "Number 6..?" Umm. I'm right here... you know. The only person other than the couple that is eating. Figure it out... take your time... yes, it would belong to ME. (Argh.) The counter girl grabbed it from him and met me half way across the dining room as I had to make the effort to go and get it.

Honestly? This burger and rings looked GOOD! The rings were pretty good. Not great, but "fine". The burger? It was "fine" too but the bun was VERY dry on the outside. In fact, when I ran my finger across the crown it felt like fine sandpaper. The bread beneath the crust was okay but dry like you'd get from Sam's Club. The burger? I liked the initial flavor, size and texture. The lettuce was typical iceberg. The tomatoes? Unripe, bland and hard.

And then there was that grease. No, not just a "good greasy burger". The grease was a slimy grease. It was the kind of slimy grease that a napkin wouldn't wipe off. I tried. Four napkins and still the slime was on my fingers. That’s not a good kind of grease coming from a burger (IMHO).

I went to the restroom to wash my hands. The door was hard to lock. The paper towel machine wasn't working. Toilet paper rolls and paper towel rolls were on the toilet tank and not in their holders. Luckily there was some good hot water and good soap got the grease off. As I left the restroom I noticed that they had plastic bun racks stacked in front of the exit door blocking it. (That's a no-no.)

I left having eaten 2/3rds of my burger and 2/3rds of my rings. The iced tea was great. I got a little more in my cup to go. That refill gave me one more chance to glance around at the lack of decor and lack of atmosphere. I shook my head, walked out the door.

Two men were entering as I got to my car. "How was it?" one asked. I stopped and had to think for a second. I simply replied, "I'm glad I tried it once but I don't think I'll be back." They looked at each other and continued inside.

The moral of that last sentence? Perhaps my opinion doesn't really count. Perhaps you should try it out and share what you think here on this site. (I'll be watching!)

Had a delicious burger here today - at noon time there were not many customers - maybe four or five - which is a shame as the burgers are delicious and the staff is helpful. I hope people find their way to this nice spot and try out their food. They were a BIG hit in Irving - always lines out the door - and hope they can get good traffic here too. Burgers are SOOO BIG - we probably won't need dinner tonight!!

Burger Island Is Burger Heaven
by dtpegasus
on December 8, 2011
Wanting a quick meal tonight, we remembered that Burger Island is now open, so we stopped in. The place was nearly empty, and we walked to the register to order. Being picky eaters, we ordered burgers tweaked to our preferences. My husband got a BBQ burger, plain with fries, and I asked for the Hawaiian burger minus several of the toppings.
Those huge burgers (1/2 pounders) were perfectly cooked, the buns were fresh and moist, and we were both delighted with our orders. The bacon on Michael's sandwich was crisp but not burned and the tangy sauce was just right. The fries were steaming hot and fresh. My burger was topped with ripe tomato, chopped lettuce, sweet chopped onion, and lightly browned pineapple. It was perfect.
Sadly, only four other customers entered the store while we were there. Folks, give this place a try - the staff is friendly and fast, the food is great, and there are plenty of empty seats. Come on, pull up a chair and enjoy a juicy, perfectly done, well garnished burger!
